As part of my continuing quest to understand how organizations measure and quantify benefits of social media use, this was an interesting set of data.  Its from last year, and I found it while updating my blog links, but it is still relevant.

Risky Business

The more I spend time circling around what I believe to be that “one book” that I have buried in my brain somewhere, the more I believe I will be writing about risk, about the risk to organizations of having a cultural that does not actually enable competitive advantage. There are enough examples out there of companies that don’t focus on this that have experienced strategic and tactical errors (think WalMart in Germany), and enough example of how a well managed culture can add value even when new cultures are acquired or merged into the existing one (think Cisco).

I also believe we can proactively measure this using a “Cultural Audit” methodology.  I want to structure this like I would a due diligence exercise, with a robust process, geared toward specific outcomes, and with a strong set of actions emerging from the project.  The audits I have done already in the last two years have been valuable exercises, and I am hopeful that there is a new client on the horizon for 2011 that will really help me push the envelope on this fascinating work.  In the meantime, this blog is the place I will be “journaling” my thoughts on this and other topics, along with the continuing collection of referrals to great links and great stories I come across.

Skype Creates Bespoke Software to Help Refugee Workers

Skype Creates Bespoke Software to Help Refugee Workers.

A great example of what technology can mean in terms of bringing people together and connecting.  This reminds me of work I did when I was on the Board of Demnet Foundation in Hungary and we did “telecottages” for refugees of the Bosnian War in the late 90s.  It is all about giving displaced people and those who serve them access to the foreign resources they need to do their jobs well.  After having worked in Africa and experienced first-hand the technology challenges, I hope Skype considers rolling out a version of this to those of us not in development so we can also stay connected as we try to serve our clients across the “digital divide”

INSEAD Knowledge Videos – Asia campus visionaries: 10 years on

INSEAD Knowledge Videos – Asia campus visionaries: 10 years on.

An interesting video interview with the Founders of the INSEAD Singapore campus.
Those who know me (and who have interviewed with me for slots at INSEAD) will know how much I love this institution.  this hasn’t, however, stopped me from being critical of their expansion strategy and their decades long neglect of the US market from a career and alumni point of view.  I will admit, however, that the move into Singapore was exactly the right move at the right time, and has given INSEAD tremendous competitive advantage in terms of our insight, our cultural diversity, and our recruiting reach.
